As medical waste mounts, hospitals look for ways to go green; Legacy in Portland finds one

Beth Nakamura, The OregonianBill Clark, manager of environmental waste for Legacy Health System hospitals, holds a sample of clean, shredded medical waste at the site of a new system being installed at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center. The new equipment will shred items that are infectious or potentially infectious, such as hospital gowns and gauze, sterilize it and then ship it to the landfill in a compacted form. Under the old system, medical waste was sent to a company that sterilized it and threw it into the landfill whole, Clark says.
